Figure Drawing Workshop

There are several different places where an artist can attend a figure drawing workshop on the island of Oahu. The one I try to go to regularly on Sundays is in Honolulu. It’s pretty good size room that can accommodate around 35 comfortably before it becomes too crowded.

Most of the artists sit on the drawing benches, while others stand with their sketch pads on an easel, and sometimes you’ll find 2 or 3 sitting on the floor.

I usually try to get there an hour early to get a good spot since it’s on a first come, first served basis. There are others who do that too, so it ends up that most of us sit in the same spot almost every week.

This workshop has been going on for over 30 years now. People have come and gone. There was an 18 year period when I would attend maybe less than ten times a year. But I’ve been a regular for the last 3 years and hopefully more.

Figure painting/drawing is something I would like to master. I was only an art minor in college, so I didn’t have to take figure drawing/painting classes (although I did have one class where we had a nude model, that just wasn’t the focus of the class). My home city (Jacksonville, FL) had open figure drawing classes. I’ve been unable to find any in my current city (Raleigh, NC). Anyway, looks like fun!

  2. Yes, it’s a lot of fun. I figure most cities would have figure drawing workshops like we have here in Honolulu. It’s a great way to practice your drawing skills and get together with like minded people.

  3. where are the good places on Oahu? I haven’t been able to find any!!!

    • There’s one on Sunday at UH Manoa, Friday at Windward CC, there used to be one at Chaminade on Tuesday nights but I’m not sure if it’s still there. The Honolulu Museum of Art on Victoria St has a portrait workshop on Mondays.
